Gotye - Game of Thrones (feat. Dice Raw)

If you like the current number one of our Hochschulradio Aachen charts, but would like to have a little more Hip-Hop than Indie, you might like this, as well.
Dice Raw, for many people maybe known from his collaborations with the Roots, drops some fresh lines on a puristic guitar/xylophone "beat". How often do you hear that?

Sample of the Day #4: Billy Stewart - We'll Always Be Together

The last post reminded me of one of my all time favorite albums "The Pretty Toney Album" by Ghostface, which then takes me to Billy Stewart.

While his scat singing does not appear in this song but only shortly at the end, it was in fact his key characteristic which also brought him a Top 10 hit in 1966. I guess he was just slightly more focused on his first love here:

Producer Nottz used this sample perfectly in my opinion. Pretty straight forward drums underneath Stewart's voice, which are occasionally interrupted by the great horn arrangement, so Ghostface can get some air. And I think we do not need to discuss Ghostface's performance here, he just does what he does best i.e. to deliver, including a Billy Stewart style "Brrrrrrrrrrr"...

Soulchef - Only For Ent. (feat. Awon)

SoulChef just released a nice, soulful, R'n'B-influenced album called "Here & Now". Here is a small taste...

Billy Palmier - You Got

Perhaps old news for some people, but hopefully something new for more people. I have found this little gem on Billy Palmier's soundcloud. He definitely has his own original sound, which I can honestly only describe with one word: "boogie"!
Back in 2007 he released his first and only album so far "Urban Palmtree Flavours". It was also the first release of his own independent label "Citywurl". Ever since I got hold of those tracks a couple years back, it has been sitting on my mp3 player's drive and I wonder when or rather if I will ever get bored of it. Probably not, so getting it on vinyl wouldn't be the worst idea, Mr. Palmier...

A festive season y'all!

Last year Mayer Hawthorne gave us a calm interpretation of "Christmas Time is Here". This year the Analog Players Society present us a funkier approach:

Miro and I would like to thank you all for supporting Diggin' this year, wish you happy holidays - regardless of what you are celebrating - and a great start into the new year, which is definitely going to bring new Diggin' shows again - promise!

Julio Iglesias - La Mer

Something that you would rather expect my colleague Miro to post, but nevertheless...
Yesterday I went to see "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy". Besides being quite a decent thriller, it was especially the final scene which I loved the most. Nice cinematography, great song.
I know, putting Julio Iglesias on your blog is questionable, but at least give him a chance. Trust me, the horns in the background are great!

Robag Wruhme - Resident Advisor Mix

Last Friday, Warsaw had the chance to see Robag Wruhme live in action and those, who didn't seize the opportunity, surely missed out!
I had already enjoyed Thora Vukk a lot, which was also the Hochschulradio Aachen's album of the month back in May, but after Friday night I wanted more. So a friend showed me the Resident Advisor Mix from 8 months ago and it was that good, I just had to blog about it, despite it not being news at all any more. However, first of all Robag Wruhme might not be familiar with readers of this blog, because electronic music/Techno is not really the focus here.
Secondly, this mix is surprisingly techno-free. In fact, you will hear some Hip-Hop excellently merged with other stuff. For instance, there is this Veronika Fischer song, which came out '77 in East Germany, and which just blows your mind! I have to admit, I had never thought that German can be so funky...

The playlist can be found here.

The Bamboos - Wilhelm Scream (feat. Megan Washington)

Don't get me wrong, like probably about 99% (excuse my cross-reference to the previous post) of the population I also like to listen to James Blake. The only problem is that often times I have a weird feeling in my tummy afterwards, not only because of the heavy basslines, but also because of the quite depressing mood.
So, if you have ever wondered wether you can listen to Blake's lyrics without feeling so apathetic, here you go. Simply exchange the sampler with a real live band and the British male singer with an Australian female singer.

Evitan - P.T.I. (Occupy Wall Street)

The (unfortunately almost dead) movement of Occupy Wall Street gets some prominent supporters in the forms of Dres from Black Sheep and Jarobi from the Tribe, who are going to release an album as a group called Evitan some time next year.

Shoreditch is Diggin' it...

I am going to start blogging in English from now on as there have been some requests lately. Since I am not a native speaker, please bear with me and excuse some minor mistakes. So here we go...

Finally I have some time to share my (late, but also great) birthday present with you.

I got it from my brother, who wandered the side streets of London's district Shoreditch with the photographer Danielle Da Silva. While doing that, they also left some Diggin' traces to my delight. I admit, the wall art is a lot more impressive than our tiny stickers (and by no means do we want to get credit for that), but nevertheless, it never hurts to represent.

I can only recommend to check out Danielle Da Silva's website for portrays of artists like DJ Scratch, Slakah The Beatchild (remember?) as well as Beenie Man, but also for other interesting stuff.
